Captains Corner
Although I am not the first to say it, and I’m sure I won’t be the last, it is a great pleasure and a privilege to Captain the ABGC. In doing so I try to contribute, in some small way, to the running of the association and I hope helping to ensure that we all have a good time playing golf against other county groups and amongst ourselves.
On behalf of all the members and myself, I would also like to thank all the members of our committee and all the match managers, who do such a vital job during the year. Without their great organisation skills, we would not be able to play all the events that we enjoy.
Our team have started the year well, with wins against Bedfordshire (away), Northants, Herts, London, and Surrey with one loss against Hants (away), and in that match most matches went to the 18th. So well done to all our players, let’s keep up the good form.
Our Spring Meeting was held at Sandford Springs, not far from Newbury, and the Addison Scott trophy was won by Tony Jeffries with 39 pts, just ahead of Trevor Hails 38pts.
For this year’s Captains Tour was held over two days at St Pierre, Chepstow. 22 players attended the two-day event which was played in fine Welsh weather on the wooded Old Course and the shorter but trickier Mathern
We were well looked after by the staff at the Marriot St Pierre who helped make sure that it ran smoothly. Congratulations go to Chris Brown, who took the Miners Lamp.
Our Captain’s Day was held at a sunny Whiteleaf and was won by Peter Harborne with an excellent 40 points, although being a past captain of Whiteleaf may have helped, winning by 1 point from Peter Hill, who is also very familiar with the course.
37 players took part in the golf, and 41 attended the dinner followed by an interesting speech from Scott Reeves of BIGGA.
Of course there is much more golf to come, including the two 4-counties competitions, held this year at Frilford Heath and Thetford.
We hope to see as many of you as possible participating in our fixtures, both this year and in the future, even if you can only make one or two, and please encourage any past captains at your club to join the fun if they haven’t already, new members are always welcome.
If you are enjoying being part of the ABGC please consider getting more involved with the organizing side of things, if you aren’t already, we can always do with more help.
Also don’t forget our Autumn Meeting. This is to be played on Thursday 9 October 2025 Dunstable Downs Golf Club, always a great challenge with fantastic views. Please try to make it, as it promises to be a good one.
